Terrestri, palustri e marine
Esistono tartarughe terrestri, che vivono solo sulla terraferma, tartarughe d'acqua dolce e tartarughe marine. Il guscio non è una "casa" da cui uscire: è parte dello scheletro, saldato alla colonna vertebrale e alle costole.
Curiosità
- La tartaruga gigante Jonathan, che vive sull'isola di Sant'Elena, ha quasi 200 anni ed è considerata l'animale terrestre vivente più vecchio.
- In molte specie il sesso dei piccoli dipende dalla temperatura delle uova durante l'incubazione.
Tartarughe in Italia
In Italia vivono la tartaruga di Hermann, terrestre, e la Caretta caretta, la tartaruga marina che depone le uova anche su molte spiagge italiane. Sono entrambe protette: per detenere una tartaruga terrestre serve la documentazione CITES. Se trovi un nido sulla spiaggia, non toccarlo e segnalalo.
Cura in casa
Le tartarughe terrestri hanno bisogno di vivere all'aperto in un recinto sicuro, con sole, zone d'ombra e una dieta a base di erbe e verdure, e vanno in letargo d'inverno. Le tartarughe d'acqua richiedono acquari grandi e filtrati.
