Origini
Vengono dalle Ande del Sud America, dove sono stati addomesticati migliaia di anni fa. Il nome "porcellino d'India" deriva dalla confusione degli esploratori europei tra le Americhe e le Indie.
Carattere
Sono animali da branco, mansueti e raramente aggressivi. Comunicano con una grande varietà di suoni: fischi, borbottii, fusa e squittii, ognuno con un significato diverso.
Curiosità
- Come l'uomo, non riescono a produrre la vitamina C: devono assumerla ogni giorno con la dieta.
- In Svizzera la legge vieta di tenere una cavia da sola, proprio perché è un animale sociale.
- Vivono in media 5-7 anni.
Cura e convivenza
Vanno tenuti almeno in coppia, in uno spazio ampio e sicuro. La dieta si basa su fieno sempre disponibile, verdure fresche ricche di vitamina C, come peperoni e prezzemolo, e un pellet specifico. Le unghie vanno controllate e accorciate regolarmente.
