Lontra marina e lontra europea

La lontra marina vive lungo le coste del Pacifico settentrionale e passa quasi tutta la vita in mare. La lontra europea, invece, vive nei fiumi e nei laghi, anche in Italia, dove è rara e presente soprattutto al Centro-Sud, ma in lenta ripresa.

Curiosità

  • La lontra marina ha la pelliccia più fitta del regno animale, che la protegge dal freddo al posto del grasso.
  • Usa i sassi come strumenti per rompere i gusci di molluschi e ricci, e spesso conserva il suo sasso preferito in una tasca di pelle sotto l'ascella.
  • Le lontre giocano molto, anche da adulte, scivolando su fango e neve.

Un ruolo importante

Le lontre marine sono una "specie chiave": mangiando i ricci di mare, proteggono le foreste di alghe kelp, habitat di moltissimi altri animali. La lontra europea, invece, è un indicatore della buona salute dei fiumi.
