Discende dai piccoli bulldog inglesi che nell'Ottocento seguirono in Francia i merlettai di Nottingham emigrati in Normandia. A Parigi divenne presto il cane di moda di artisti e borghesi.
Carattere
È affettuoso, allegro e molto legato al proprietario, che segue ovunque. Si adatta bene alla vita in appartamento, abbaia poco e non ha bisogno di lunghe passeggiate. Può essere testardo nell'educazione: servono pazienza e premi.
Curiosità
- È una razza "brachicefala": il muso schiacciato lo fa russare e respirare rumorosamente.
- Per la sua struttura fisica di solito non sa nuotare: attenzione a piscine e laghi.
- I parti avvengono molto spesso con taglio cesareo.
Cura e convivenza
Il muso corto rende difficile regolare la temperatura: d'estate rischia facilmente il colpo di calore e va tenuto al fresco. Le pieghe del muso vanno pulite regolarmente. Prima di prenderne uno è bene scegliere allevatori che selezionino soggetti con narici aperte e respirazione libera.
