Origini
Fu sviluppato dal popolo Chukchi della Siberia orientale come cane da slitta, capace di trainare carichi leggeri per lunghe distanze con pochissimo cibo. Divenne celebre nel 1925, quando le slitte trainate dagli husky portarono il siero contro la difterite fino alla città di Nome, in Alaska: un'impresa resa famosa dai cani Balto e Togo.
Carattere
È socievole, giocherellone e affettuoso con tutti, quindi pessimo cane da guardia. È però molto indipendente e ha un forte istinto predatorio: tende a scappare e a inseguire gatti e piccoli animali.
Curiosità
- Gli occhi possono essere azzurri, marroni o uno di ciascun colore (eterocromia).
- Durante la muta, due volte l'anno, perde una quantità enorme di pelo.
- Riesce a dormire sulla neve coprendosi il muso con la coda.
Cura e convivenza
Ha bisogno di tantissimo movimento: corsa, canicross, lunghe escursioni. Il giardino deve essere ben recintato. Soffre il caldo: d'estate va portato fuori solo nelle ore fresche.
